What is Music for Young Children

Music for Young Children has been teaching children the foundation of music education and piano playing in a group setting for 46 years. At Musica, we offer the official MYC levels that fit ages 3–9: Sunshine 1, Sunbeams 1, and Moonbeams 1.

The MYC approach blends singing, listening, movement, keyboard skills, and music literacy in classes that feel joyful and structured at the same time. It is a thoughtful first step for children who are just beginning and a strong bridge toward future private study.

  • Official MYC curriculum taught by certified MYC teachers
  • Group learning that combines keyboard skills, singing, composing, rhythm, and listening
  • Age-appropriate activities that support cognitive, physical, and social growth
  • Clear progression from Sunshine to Sunbeams to Moonbeams
  • Conservatory repertoire integrated into the learning path culminating in a Grade 1 conservatory exam in the Moonbeam 3 year
  • A joyful foundation for future private lessons and long-term music study

Frequently Asked Questions

Our MYC Sunshine 1 program is designed for children ages 3 and 4. Children ages 5, 6, or 7 begin at the Sunbeam 1 level, and older beginners jump in at the Moonbeam 1 level. These are the ideal time to introduce music education in a structured group setting.
Yes! We encourage parents or caregivers to participate in our MYC classes. This provides context for learning, and helps parents actively support their child’s musical development at home.
MYC and private lessons serve different purposes. MYC is the ideal first step — it introduces music fundamentals in a fun, social group setting where kids learn from each other. Many students transition to private piano lessons after MYC Moonbeams to develop deeper technique and performance skills.
Perfect! MYC Sunshine 1 is specifically designed for children with zero prior piano experience. We start from the very beginning and make learning feel like play. Zero experience necessary — just bring enthusiasm and curiosity!
MYC classes are small and intentional, typically 3 - 6 children per class. This ensures each child receives personalized attention while still enjoying the energy of group learning, peer interaction, and collaborative music-making.
Students can transition to private piano lessons with our certified teachers, continue into an advanced group or semiprivate class, or choose a different program entirely. We work with each family to decide the best next step based on their child's interests, goals, and musical progress.
